Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC)

Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) is a non-toxic, odorless white flocculent powder featuring stable chemical properties and excellent water solubility. It dissolves easily in water to form a neutral or slightly alkaline transparent viscous aqueous solution. CMC aqueous solution is compatible with most water-soluble adhesives and synthetic resins, while being insoluble in common organic solvents such as ethanol. Versatile in functionality, CMC serves as a high-performance binder, thickener, suspending agent, emulsifier, dispersant, stabilizer and textile sizing agent across multiple industrial fields.

Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose, the sodium salt form of CMC, is the most widely consumed cellulose ether product worldwide. It is commonly nicknamed “industrial MSG” for its powerful modifying effect on industrial raw materials and finished solutions.

  • Mold resistance & low maintenance cost: CMC-containing drilling mud is highly resistant to microbial mold growth. It requires neither high pH value maintenance nor extra preservatives during long-term storage and usage.
  • Strong anti-salt contamination performance: The modified drilling fluid can resist pollution caused by various soluble inorganic salts, adapting to complex underground water quality conditions.
  • Excellent high-temperature stability: CMC retains stable fluid loss control performance even under working temperatures exceeding 150°C, suitable for deep-well high-temperature drilling environments.

CMC products are available in two mainstream grades for targeted matching: high-viscosity high-substitution CMC fits low-density drilling mud, while low-viscosity high-substitution CMC matches high-density mud systems. Engineers shall select suitable CMC specifications based on practical working conditions, including mud type, geological environment and actual well depth.

2. Applications in Textile, Printing and Dyeing Industry

Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose is adopted widely as a professional yarn sizing agent in textile manufacturing. It fits sizing processing for cotton yarn, silk, wool, chemical fiber and blended fabric products, improving yarn strength and abrasion resistance for subsequent weaving procedures.
